The Best Oppo Phones to Buy in Malaysia

best oppo phones worth buying in malaysia

Oppo smartphones are unique. They do not offer the best smartphone quality in the market, nor do they offer the cheapest pricing. Yet many would still choose Oppo because of how well they have positioned their phone in the market, and how beautiful their phone is designed.

For your information, Oppo, Vivo, Realme and even OnePlus are actually owned by BBK Electronics which based in Guang Dong, China. Although OnePlus denies their ties with BBK, it still uses the same manufacturing line and shares the same supply chain resources.

How we pick the best Oppo Phone

Similar to how we pick the best Xiaomi phone to buy in Malaysia, we split the phones into three price ranges, which are budget, mid-range, and flagship smartphone.

Smartphone tierPrice Range
Budget oppo phone<RM1,000
Mid-range oppo phoneRM1,000 to RM2,000
Flagship oppo phone>RM2,000

We will be selecting the phone for each price point by judging their criteria as below:

  • Price-performance-ratio – At TechRakyat.com, we emphasize on value for money. The price must be reasonable for the performance being offered.
  • SOC – Generally, we favour Snapdragon over Mediatek Helio chipsets.
  • Useful Features – Important one including updated software, storage size and phone camera quality

Also, we focus only on comparing Oppo phones that are announced and released in the year 2020. Any older Oppo model 2020 will not be on the list.

Without further ado, let us begin!

Best Budget Oppo Smartphones

image 12 5

Oppo has a huge variety of budget phones such as Oppo A12e, Oppo A5s, Oppo A12, etc. But none of them catches our attention and deemed worthy to recommend.

That main reason for that is because all these phones, despite being released in the year 2020, still comes with an Android 9.0 system. Worst of all? Oppo has shown no sign of upgrading them to Android 10 in the near future, let alone Android 11.

Users are at security risk because the older Android system tends to have bugs and needs to get fixed through Android updates. Most users neglected the fact that a good smartphone requires a combination of great hardware and software. Software is equally important in your daily usage.

In my humble opinion, all smartphones should be equipped with the latest Android version! Xiaomi did a great job by shipping even their cheapest budget phone with the latest Android system. We wonder when Oppo could follow suit on such a good practice.

Hence, we don’t recommend buying budget Oppo smartphone. We know it is going to disappoint some of the readers but we will stick to this decision at the moment.

When it comes to Oppo Mid Range smartphones, Oppo does not give us many choices. With only Oppo A9, A92, Reno 3 and Reno 3 pro in the mid-range smartphone list, it is not hard for us to pick a winner.

Oppo A9 is strictly out of consideration because Oppo A92 is clearly a better choice which only cost slightly more. So, we will be comparing Oppo A92 with Oppo Reno 3.

Both Oppo A92 and Oppo Reno 3 offers great value for money. Let’s check out a side-by-side specs comparison for these smartphones:

Design

image 12 1

Personally, I think Oppo A92 looks better than Oppo Reno 3. From the front, Oppo A92 uses punch hole camera screen design that is more stylish than Reno 3 tear drop design.

The back of Oppo A92 uses a rectangular-shaped quad-camera layout that’s similar to Samsung S20 and Huawei P40.

The Oppo Reno 3 uses a single line layout which is a bit outdated and commonly used across BKK Electronics’s smartphone. Even the Oneplus Nord is using a similar camera layout. (probably for cost-saving reason)

Performance

Mediatek Helio P90 and Snapdragon 665 offer similar performance where Helio P90 is slightly faster in real-world performance. But the advantage is close to negligible.

You may check out the speed test below:

Phone Screen/Display

Oppo Reno 3 comes with a 6.4″ AMOLED display while Oppo A92 comes with a 6.5″ IPS LCD Display.

Oppo Reno 3 AMOLED Display is definitely the winner here as AMOLED not only provides a clearer screen but also is more friendly to the eye, especially when using the phone in a dark environment.

Camera and Video Recording

To put the long story short, camera A92 is poorer but comparable to Oppo Reno 3. Under certain conditions, the photo may not be as detailed and sharp as Reno 3. Overall, it is still a good camera.

Check out our very own Malaysia tech Youtuber, Izami Gadget doing camera test on Oppo A92 vs Oppo Reno 3 Pro. Oppo Reno 3 pro and oppo reno 3 uses the same Sony IMX 686 sensor, so it is a good reference for Oppo Reno 3 camera performance.

Battery & Fast-Charging Capability

Oppo A92 comes with a larger battery of 5000mAh while Reno 3 has 30W fast-charging. It is down to personal preferences and consumption habit. Personally, I prefer the fast charge because I don’t use my phone when it is charging. So, fast charging speed reduces my phone usage “downtime”.

If you prefer a battery that can last the whole day and charge the phone at night. Then Oppo A92 is definitely your choice here no doubt.

Verdict

Oppo A92 is the best mid-range Oppo smartphone to buy in Malaysia now. Because it packs a complete package at a reasonable price. Its performance and speed are comparable to Reno 3. The camera and video recording quality are acceptable. Also, equipped with snappy side fingerprint sensor and convenient dual sim with a dedicated micro SD card tray.

Its biggest downside is its LCD screen instead of AMOLED panel. But I know some prefer LCD screen because it is more durable and no screen burn-in issue.

If you still rather to buy the Reno series, it is wiser to buy Oppo Reno 3 Pro. It is only slightly more expensive but overall a better phone than Oppo Reno 3.

Verdict

We recommend taking the Oppo Find X2 Pro. Why? Because of the price. It is actually one of most affordable upgrade in the market.

Why we say RM600 upgrade is affordable? Confuse? Let’se check out the comparison table below.

Smartphone ModelStorage & priceStorage & priceUpgrade cost
iPhone 11 Pro256GB, RM5599512GB, RM6499RM900
Samsung Galaxy Note 10+256GB, RM4199512GB, RM4799RM600
Price taken from Apple and Samsung Malaysia

A mere storage upgrade for Samsung and Apple smartphone will set you back at least RM600. With the RM600 you pay to upgrade from Oppo Find X2 to Oppo Find X2 Pro, you are getting IP68 and a better ultrawide camera lense on top of upgraded storage size.

Another thing, Oppo Find X2 Pro is secretly the cheapest 512GB smartphone in Malaysia. The 512GB storage is handy especially for those who want to make full use of the 48MP camera lens. Photos and videos are going to take up a huge chunk of the storage area.

Moreover, IP68 gives you peace of mind for such a premium phone. So, you could be less worry using it on a rainy day or bringing it to the seaside.

Therefore we recommend buying Oppo Find X2 Pro if you want a flagship Oppo phone.
